Couple of things:
Indeed, you need to create a tier and a node if you have none yet.
If you don't have a .Net app on the server, you can either use the .Net
agent to monitor the OS metrics or the standalone machine agent.
The difference between the 2 are:
Machine agent can host extensions :

.Net agent is better in collecting Perfmon metrics and well integrated with
.Net Application instrumentation
The standalone agent requires a JRE
